Keep our children safe

2016-07-06 06:00

CHILD WELFARE and Childline Free State warns households using candles for lighting to not place anything that might catch fire near candles. Such households are also encouraged to use proper candle holders to avoid causing fires. This appeal is part of the safety campaign to protect children against any danger and abuse during the winter period.

Wilhelmina Weitz of Child Welfare and Childline encourages households to also contact their 24-hour toll-free numbers: 080-005-5555 and 080-012-2333.

Be safe and follow these guidelines:

  • Use the correct candle holder to place the candle in and not a saucer or tin.
  • Collect rainwater to use in case of a fire.
  • When you sweep the yard, collect the sand in a bucket to be used in case of a fire.
  • When a shack or house is built, make sure you have an exit to escape in case of a fire.
  • Occupants should be aware of exit points or routes.
  • Children should not be left unsupervised and should be left in the care of an adult at all times.
  • Children should not hang out in public places like malls unnecessarily.

Parents are urged to make it their responsibility to provide proper care.
