Keep valuables safe

Incidents of theft out of motor vehicles are on the rise. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued tips that can help curb this crime.

As the owner of a motor vehicle, you are encouraged to:

  • Fit an alarm or anti-theft device.
  • Ensure doors are locked and the windows are closed when you leave your vehicle.
  • Do not leave your valuables (cellphone, laptop, handbag, etc.) in plain sight.

) Be aware of people coming up to you to talk; the intention can be to steal items they see inside the vehicle.

  • Avoid parking your vehicle where there are no security guards.
  • Parking area with a parking attendant or someone patrolling are best, otherwise try to park in locations that are well-lit and well-populated.

) Store luggage in the car’s boot, where it is out of sight, before parking.

  • Do not leave your firearm in the motor vehicle, even if it is hidden. This is against the law.
