DURING the funeral service of the 15-year-old Natefo Segoje on Friday (15/04), Kgosi Agisanyang Setlhodi from the Seodin Village, that falls under the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, expressed his disgust at the manner in which Natefo had been killed and her body thrown in a drain.

The decomposed body of Natefo, a gr. 7 learner of the Seodin Primary School, was found on Tuesday, 5 April, in a drain at the Mapoteng Primary School, not far from her home.

This follows her disappearance after she had been given permission to attend the Desperado Bikers’ Event in Mothibistad on 27 February.

“I do not know what has happened in our society. People we trust are the ones who harm our children,” Setlhodi said.

Calling on the youth to practise safety at their homes and in the community at large by being home at sunset, Setlhodi blamed circumstances in the community that lead to alcohol abuse and smoking with okka pipes.

Setlhodi also called on community members to protect one another by working with the police in catching suspects and by supporting one another.

“It is also very distur-bing that our community members are the ones that sell these things (okka pipes) that they (children) use to smoke and that leads to the lack of concentration at home and at schools.”

Pledging his support to work with the police in catching the person who had killed Natefo, Setlhodi highlighted another incident. Two teenage girls were brought to him by a good Samaritan after they had been given a lift in the dark from Bankhara Bodulong.

“That was just after the body of Natefo had been found. The 10 km that she was supposed to travel to get back home, included dark areas. Thus, she decided to contact an acquaintance to take her home.

“This sad incident should serve as a lesson for our children not to travel at night. Parents must also ensure that they know their children’s whereabouts after sunset.”

  • The death of Natefo follows the sentencing to 20 years imprisonment (on 1 April in the Kimberley High Court) of Night Kome (38) for the murder, kidnapping and rape of Olebogile Kaogase (19) of Tsineng in Kuruman on 5 July 2015.
