The death of Refilwe Letebele (28) has sent shock waves through the city of Kimberley after she was allegedly stabbed to death by her former lover early on Friday (12/01).

The incident happened at the young woman’s home in Barkly Road, Kimberley, after the suspect, whose name is still withheld, had entered her home.

According to Lt.Col Dimakatso Mooi, police spokesperson, the suspect is still in hospital and under arrest after he allegedly attempted suicide.

A court appearance date has not yet been confirmed.

Mooi states that on Friday at about 07:30, a 32-year-old man entered the house of his former girlfriend and stabbed her multiple times.

“The woman died on the scene. The man then allegedly stabbed himself and tried to slit his throat.”

The late Letebele went to school in Kimberley where she matriculated at Kimberley Girls’ High, before proceeding to do her B.Com Accounting degree at the University of Pretoria.

At the time of her death, she was working at the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) in Kimberley.

She is described as a cheerful person and a lover of life with much to live for.

According to one of the mourners, Letebele was a beautiful soul who did not deserve such a tragic death.

Letebele celebrated her 28th birthday in December, when she bought a new car.

After the incident, social media was flooded with concerns raised by women, asking when the abuse against women would stop.

“How many women have to die at the hands of their boyfriends and husbands before we consider femicide a serious problem in this country?

“Ons kan nie meer nie!” read another post.

“Her life needs to be celebrated. She was a lover of life and a very jolly person,” read another post.
