The University of the Free State (UFS) prides itself with quality representation in the South African students’ team to the 2019 World Student Games to be held in Italy from 3 to 14 July.

The Kovsie sport club distinguishes itself with the inclusion of players, coaches and a team manager in the strong team for the global games.

Ruben Kruger and Heinrich Willemse are in the tennis squad, while coach Marnus Kleinhans is in the technical team and Janine de Kock the team manager, the role she also fulfills at Kovsies.

The selection of Willemse and Kruger of the Kovsie Tennis Club richly rewards the team for continued dominance in the sport in recent years. The team has won the University Sport South Africa (USSA) championship every year since 2010.

Willemse and Kruger are currently the university’s number one and two players respectively. They were also in the UFS team that took part at last year’s USSA competition.

Two UFS talented athletes have also made the national university team. They are Tyler Beling, who will compete in the half-marathon, and Yolandi Stander in discus. They both won gold medals at the USSA championships in April.

Emmarie Fouché of KovsieSport is an athletics coach and Godfrey Tenoff will coach the South African’s students men’s team. Tenoff is sports manager at KovsieSport.

Two members of Kovsie Aquatics joined the South African swimming team. Eben Vorster, who is studying overseas, swims for the UFS Club when he is in South Africa.

Marco Markgraaff, coach of the club, will act as the head coach of the South African student swimmers.
