The Dr Reginald Cingo Comprehensive School from Kroonstad will represent the Free State at this year’s Coca-Cola Schools National Championship for u.15 boys.

The team was crowned as the Free State champion after winning the provincial final in Welkom on 30 August.

Dr Cingo fought hard to claim the win, beating the Zastron-based team of the Samuel Johnson Intermediate School by 2 – 1.

Dr Cingo will be one of the nine contenders at this year’s national final round scheduled to take place in Durban from 18 to 21 September.

As the provincial trophy eluded Dr Cingo for seven years, this will be the team’s first time to compete nationally.

Last year, the school finished as the runner-up, with the Moroka Secondary School claiming the trophy.

In 2013 and 2015, Dr Cingo managed to achieve a bronze medal.

“The boys feel good about winning the provincial competition, and it motivates them to work even harder,” said Moseli Mohlehli, coach.

The newly crowned champions fought like warriors for the victory, with five players continuing despite sustaining injuries.

Dr Cingo finished the match with only ten players after The victorious school team finished the match with ten players on the field this happened after one of the boys was sent off the field for two separate incidents of misconduct.

Dr Cingo was unbeaten in the provincial leg of the tournament, eliminating the five other teams competing for the provincial title.

In the preliminary fixtures, the Kroonstad-based school beat Lesoana Intermediate from Qwaqwa and Seemahale Secondary from Botshabelo by 1 – 0 and 2 – 0 respectively.

The runner-up, Samuel Johnson, showed determination, convincingly winning its preliminary matches against Welkom High School and Qalabotjhaba Intermediate School by 2 – 0 and 1 – 0 respectively.

This was the first time a school from Zastron reached the provincial final of this tournament.

Harmony Secondary from Virginia and Louis Botha from Bloemfontein are the only two Free State schools that have won the national title.

Harmony lifted the trophy in 2008, and Louis Botha in 2012.

As the provincial champion, Dr Cingo’s immediate challenge is to attain record of their two FS opponents nationally
