The 40-year anniversary of the passing of activist Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was jointly hosted by the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the School of Humanities at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU), as well as the Sol Plaatje Municipality.

Tuesday (27/02) marked the day when this founder of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and African Studies lecturer at the University of the Witwaters- rand (Wits) died in Kimberley.

Sobukwe, who resided at No. 6 Naledi Street in Galeshewe, took his last breath on 27 February 1978 at the Kimberley Hospital.

He had a law office in what is today known as the Mayibuye Precinct.

Sobukwe is celebrated and honoured as a giant and defender of the human rights of Africans during the oppressive reign of the Apartheid regime.

A wreath-laying ceremony was scheduled for the day at the home of Sobukwe in Naledi Street, followed by a visit to his office space at the Mayibuye Precinct in Galeshewe.

A public lecture was scheduled to follow at SPU.

This was delivered by Rev. Prof. Tshepo Lephakga of the Department of Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology at the University of South Africa (Unisa) in Pretoria.
