As a response to the challenges facing maths and science education in Kimberley, founder and Managing Director Anne Maclean established the academy in 2006 and ever since it has produced various professionals in the STEMI field. Senior Operations manager of De Beers, Simangele Soni, who is also a product of Maclean said that she is looking forward to the brillant astronauts, pilots, engineers, construction managers and environmental scientists that this programme will produce in the future. “It is programmes like these that help equip young people to build and compete in the economy of tomorrow, it is a privilege to be part of this momentous achievement”. De Beers has actively contributed to the academy by providing sponsorship towards the operational costs, transportation for learners, food, stationary and other costs needed to become sustainable and self-reliant. The academy is designed to develop and nurture the passion for maths in learners from an early age and increase the number of learners who opt for maths in Gr. 10. The academy also focuses on the holistic development of the learners and provides them with opportunities to develop necessary skills such as communication, problem-solving, innovation, research and Information Technology.
