Learners can win big by not wasting recyclable items

2018-05-23 06:02

In the Waste-to-Use Competition for Gr. 7 and Gr. 8 learners from the Free State and Northern Cape, big prizes can be won.

The competition, which is a creative recycling project, will be launched during the BloemBuild Expo on 25 and 26 July in Bloemfontein.

Learners may create a project consisting of 90% recyclable material, for example empty plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and wire.

The end product must be a useful item that does not exceed the size limit of 40 x 40 x 40 cm.

Examples of items that can be made are toys, art, birdfeeders, piggy banks, hats, jewelry, cell phone covers, decorations, paperweights, clothing, household utensils, lamp shades, handbags, ornaments, pencil cases and containers.

All schools, parents and the general public are welcome to visit the exhibitions – entry to the expo and exhibitions are free.

Prizes, including vouchers from Protea Bookstore, are up for grabs for the participants who earn the first three places in each year group, as well as a R1 000 prize for each winner’s school.

The theme for this year’s expo is “How to survive the drought” and the school competition goes hand-in-hand with how one can use recyclable material to make the earth a better place. Participants can send a completed entry form to bloembuild2018@gxy. co.za by 6 July.

Learners, accompanied by a teacher or parent, must submit the project at the BloemBuild Expo at the Callie Human Centre on the main campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) on Wednesday, 25 July, between 09:00 and 10:00.

No late entries will be accepted.

Adjudication will take place at the expo and winners will be announced shortly thereafter, at 11:00.

Winners must be present to receive their prizes.

Prizes are not transferrable for cash.

The judges’ decision is final and no further correspondence will be entered into in this regard.

The entries will be on display at the expo until 26 July.

Learners or schools may collect the projects again on 27 July before 10:00, should they wish to do so.

No projects will be returned, stored or delivered by the South African Institute for Architechts (Saia) Free State after the mentioned deadline. Visit Saia Free State’s Facebook page for more information on the BloemBuild Expo or dial 051-447-4909, send an email to fsadmin@saia. org.za, or visit www.saiafs.org.za.
