Let kids learn, play

2018-03-07 06:02

Liholo Liholo, Bloemfontein:

I do not normally receive the Express newspaper, but I happened to get the edition of 28 February.

What caught my attention in the edition in question, was the stand-alone photo caption on p 2.

The stand-alone photo showed three boys push a trolley loaded with recyclable materials.

The headline was “Take future into own hands”.

I am partly disturbed because the reality is “child abuse”.

What normally happens is that some adults, ashamed of being seen pushing such trollies to the scrapyard, they would ask children to do the job for them while they (parents) would be waiting at the scrapyard.

After selling the recyclables materials, these children are then paid.

I am a bottle dealer myself, buying re-useable bottles for companies like Distell and South African Breweries.

The same thing is happening often and some adults are ashamed of selling bottles and they would rather send children.

I mostly ask them (children) who sent them to sell recyclable materials and would turn them away with an instruction to tell whoever sent them to come personally to sell those materials.

Those children should be at school.

Even if these children are not at school, they should be doing their school work. They should at least be playing like other normal children.
