Life of crime punished

A Bloemfontein man’s crime streak which has spanned several years, and the subsequent sentencing, has amounted to two terms of life imprisonment for murder, rape and housebreaking, as well as theft.

In the most recent case, the Bloemfontein High Court sentenced Kathleho Khaothela (23) after finding him guilty of raping and murdering Tholoana Smith in October 2014.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and rape, five years for housebreaking and theft and five years for a second count of housebreaking and theft.

Const. Mosili Ntsika, Free State police spokesperson, said DNA samples had linked Khaothela to the rape and murder of Smith, whose body had been found in an open veld between Phase 6 and 7 in Bloemfontein.

She said the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds to the head and neck and that the postmortem results later indicated that she had also been raped. Smith had been heading to her boyfriend’s house in Turflaagte at 23:00 on the night she was murdered.

“But she never made there. Smith’s family found out the following day that she had been murdered,” said Ntsika.

Ntsika said Khaothela was already in jail for a rape and robbery, for which he had been convicted and sentenced last year. She said the he had been sentenced for various crimes committed in the Bloemspruit and Kopanong area during September and October 2016, as well as February this year. The two life sentences for the brutal murder of Smith add to prison terms.
