Two Free State departments – Education and Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation – have teamed up to host a home language reading competition.

It involves learners from Gr. 3 to Gr. 9 and unemployed youth.

The languages involved are Sotho, Xhosa, Zulu and English.

The competition aims to improve literacy levels and promote reading in home languages among learners.

It is called the Provincial Competition on Language Development and Enrichment.

The theme is “Discovering the salient Elements of Language through Speaking, Reading, Spelling, substantiating Own Views and using the Poetic Language to explore the Wonders of Language”.

The competition is underway at the Black Mountain Hotel at Thaba Nchu.

It started on Monday (03/09) and will end on Friday (07/09).
