Local model thrives in NY

2017-09-13 06:02

Thatto Tshipo, a local model of eModels Kimberley, is truly overwhelmed by the recognition he received while attending the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (Arts) in New York.

During his two weeks’ arts, performing and modelling trip to New York, he performed in monologues, film scenes, improvisation and TV commercials.

His trip was not only about exploring the city, but also hard work, and he returned home with four awards.

Thatto was awarded a trophy for fashion runway (top three), a badge for creative runway (top five), a callback from the New York Film Academy and an invitation to attend Arts Hollywood.

He expressed his gratitude towards the people of the Northern Cape for opening their hearts and helping him to achieve his dream.

Thatto appeared in Express Northern Cape on 28 May 2017, when he asked for support towards his journey to the arts showcase from which he returned on 10 August.

Through support and various sponsorships, he was able to join the South African team which departed from Johannesburg to New York City on 28 July, where they started their programme with an informative workshop at the Film Academy.

“I had the privilege of getting so much local support and working with numerous individuals, such as NZ Fils Collection (a local clothing line), who designed my modeling outfits, and receiving private acting classes with Carl Benade, and modeling training with eModels Kimberley,” said Thatto.

“I am also grateful for the governmental organisations and private companies that have sponsored me, inclu-ding the Office of the Premier, Cecil Nurse, Vital Air and Vees Videos.

“My school (the Kimberley Technical High School) has also supported me a lot during this journey,” he added.

According to Thatto, he had the opportunity to perform at the Arts Showcase Convention at the Walt Disney World Swan and World Dolphin Resorts, where he had to utilise everything he had learnt during his bootcamp training in Johannesburg.

He considers himself lucky to have attended workshops with international agents, such as James Pentaudi and Nicolle Campbell, and South African regional arts director Elsubie Verlinden, on the power of branding.

“Those workshops have truly taught me a lot more about the modeling and entertainment industry and I definitely learnt new strategies that I can use to further my career as an artist,” he said.

Upon his return from New York, the confident young model and artist believes he has the potential to become an international model.

“During our open interviews, I had a couple of agents who would love to represent me any time, thus I consider relocating to the States.

“The judges were really impressed with me, thus I received the awards.

“Elsubie Verlinden was extremely happy with the work I put in and she personally awarded me for top branding.”

To motivate and encourage fellow artists and models, Thatto said Arts was an incredible, legitimate event that assisted aspiring artists to launch their career internationally.

“You learn a lot there and ultimately flourish when you put in all the hard work.

“It is about networking and building relationships with the agents.

“Arts is a life-changing experience and I am proud to have represented not only Kimberley, but the country at large in the USA.”
