A sanitary product project started by a Jagersfontein woman, Rebecca Molefe, has brought relief in the lives of the learners of local schools.

This is after products were supplied to three local schools: Jagersfontein Middelbare, Boaramelo Combined and St Lawrence Primary.

Essentials enabling girls to maintain hygiene were supplied during the project’s official launch on 20 September.

More than 450 girls attended the launch, during which they each received a bag of sanitary products.

Molefe, who is from the Itumeleng Township, started the No to Period Shame programmeearlier this year.

She took the initiative after observing the plight of girl learners who go without these products during menstruation.

According to a study, 88% of girls in South African schools have no access to sanitary products.

Molefe’s effort was boosted by the Itumeleng Community Trust (ICT), which she approached to assist with a sponsorship.

Gillian Vermaak, manager at the ICT, said one of the network entities came on board to make the project a reality.

“Working in collaboration with the Imbumba Foundation from KwaZulu-Natal, the ICT provided products to each girl to last four months. Once measured, the programme is expected to operate indefinitely,” said Vermaak.

She said a long-term plan is needed to sustain the campaigns providing these type of products to the needy learners, to help instil confidence and restore their dignity.
