The contest for the 2017-’18 Free State stream of the ABC Motsepe League championship nears the halfway mark with few changes in the standings.

The competition at the top of the log, featuring clubs vying for the championship, remains unchanged.

Most of the clubs are left with two games to complete the first round of the fiercely-contested provincial stream.

The five top-seeded clubs in terms of positions and points are Tshiame All Stars (32), Mangaung Unite (28), Bloemfontein Celtic (27), Bloemfontein Young Tigers (24) and African Warriors (22).

Three of these clubs which were in action on Saturday (13/01), excluding Tigers, managed to record wins, consolidating their position on the log.

All Stars beat Lijabatho by 2 – 0, Mangaung demolished relegation-bound Dla2 FC by 4 – 0, and Celtic narrowly beat Dikwena by 3 – 2.

Tigers were involved in the Nedbank Cup competition over the weekend.

Warriors suffered a 0 – 2 defeat at the hands of Harmony FC, who climbed to sixth position with 20 points following the win.

Those rooted at the bottom and threatened by relegation in terms of positions and points are Dla2 FC (6), Days FC (13), Lijabatho FC (14), Young Masters (14) and Dikwena (15).

The clubs fighting to drift away from the relegation zone are the Central University of Technology, Free State Stars (16), Kingston FC (18), Sibanye Golden Stars (19) and Kovsies (19).

The two newcomers in the league, Kovsies and Kingston, managed to collect maximum points following wins over Sibanye and Free State Stars.

Kovsies, the University of the Free State men’s team, beat visiting Sibanye by 2 – 1, while Kingston beat Free State Stars by 3 – 2 in their encounter.

Following these emphatic wins, Kovsies leapt to a seventh position and Kingston moved to the ninth position.

The good form of the two Bloemfontein newcomers has increased their chances of finishing the season in the top half, depending on their form in the second round of the league.
