Love of arts, artist celebrated at festival

2018-07-04 06:02

A true labour of love will be celebrated and showcased at this year’s Vrystaat Arts Festival, taking place from 8 to 14 July.

The main campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) will play host of a range of events, while some will be staged at other selected venues in the City of Roses.

The theme for the 2018 festival is “Migration”.

A celebration of a love for the arts will come in the form of live music performances and art markets, with international guests such as David Doyle and Glen Murray attending.

One of the films featured at the festival is Loving Vincent, a biographical drama about the last few days of Vincent van Gogh.

This is the world’s first fully oil-painted animated film. The fascinating encounter will bring all his artworks to life.

The artist’s last days appear in swirling, animated frames; it is an impressive but weirdly exasperating exercise in style.

Vincent van Gogh is known for his unique ways of painting, and it came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. However, he specialised in the post-impressionism.

The film’s 65 000 frames was created in oil canvas using the same technique that Van Gogh had used.

It was created by a team of 115 painters who travelled from studios around Poland and Greece to be part of the production.

The team who worked on the film has been nominated for the Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta for best animation feature.

It involves actors like Jerome Flynn, Robert Gulaczyk and Douglas Booth.

The film will be shown on 10 July, at 14:00 and on 11 July, at 18:00 in the film studio on the UFS.

Entry to the viewing costs R30 per person.
