Lying does have a grey area

When can we tell lies? Is it acceptable to lie?

There are different lies.

There is a white lie, especially one told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.

There is a blue lie, which is understood to draw a line between good and evil.

Once, I was at church and the reverend talked about a good lie. I was so disturbed, as to me a lie is a lie – and is never good.

However, when I googled it, I found discussions in both directions and Joshua 2:4-5, in which Rahab conceals the two spies, was widely discussed.

The other example is in Exodus 1:19, in which the midwives deceive Pharaoh by letting the new baby boys live.

Other people argue that you can conceal the truth from wicked people. You may tell a lie to protect yourself or others.

Sometimes you may withhold the truth regarding age or health or another reason. I have a new-born grandson. When my six-year-old granddaughter, his sister, sees him, she asks how he got out of the stomach.

Her mother, when pregnant, used to tell her that the baby was in the stomach. Now the mother, when asked to explain, is in a corner and quickly answers that it is only the doctor who knows.

A white lie is about a small or unimportant matter, and is said to be told to avoid hurting another person. Usually it is used to be tactful or polite.

These lies may save a relationship or buy time. These are usually the answers if, for example, someone asks you how the food was, or “Am I fat?”.

I have been in situations where I said something, and nobody commented. Were they afraid to speak their mind, lest they hurt me? Would it have been better to lie?

A black lie is more dishonest. People may tell them to deceive you. These lies may hurt you.

Some people find it easy to lie. For others it is so difficult, and you can see in their faces or with their demeanour when they lie.

Some people are not able to accept lies, whether it is a white lie or a good lie. They would rather be told the truth.

If you are a liar, people may end up not trusting you. Even when you tell the truth, they will just think you are lying.

So, the truth will set you free.

On the other hand, people may not like you because you tell it as it is, and you are not diplomatic – lying in the name of the collective good.
