The Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court sentenced a young man found guilty of rape to a 20-year prison term after being convicted of crimes committed in 2018. Dennis Babiki Coetzee (22) was sentenced on Tuesday, 14 January, for raping two women, then 33 years and 58 years old. Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, said Coetzee was linked via DNA samples to the two cases, leading to his sentencing. He received ten years for each rape. Makhele said the 33-year-old woman was an ex-lover of Coetzee. He said during the trial it had emerged that the accused had instructed his two friends who accompanied him to rape his ex-girlfriend, after which he fled the scene. He said the court acquitted one co-accused of the rape of Coetzee’s ex-girlfriend, adding that the other accused was still at large. Makhele said investigation had revealed that the 58-year-old victim had been hit with a brick and was thereafter raped.
