A Harrismith man charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition remains behind bars after he was denied bail again.
Siyabonga Molefe (35) reappeared in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on 17 April.
Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, said the suspect had been arrested in March after he allegedly threatened people with a gun at a local tavern in Harrismith.
He said the suspect had been disarmed by an off-duty officer, assisted by his colleagues who were called to the scene.
“They removed the unlicensed firearm from the suspect, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The serial numbers of the 9 mm pistol found in his possession were removed. The gun and ammunition were confiscated,” said Mophiring.
He said Molefe could not account for the firearm and did not have a license to possess the gun.
“He faces charges of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The firearm has been sent for forensic ballistic testing to determine its origin and if it was utilised to commit other crimes.”
