The long arm of the law finally brought to book one of three suspects for gang raping a wo-man, 11 years after the incident happened. On Monday, 7 August, the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court convicted the perpetrator, Themba George Mokhothu (42), to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping the victim, also 42 years old now. The gang rape ordeal reportedly occurred on 10 June 2006 at about 05:30 in a toilet at Bloemfontein’s taxi rank.Sgt Sinah Mpakane, Free State police spokesperson, said the conviction of the perpetrator be- came possible following intensive investigation by Det.Sgt Elizabeth Mophethe of the Park Road Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. She said Mokhothu was connected to the crime via DNA forensic tests. Mpakane said the victim also managed to identify Mokhothu while the other two alleged accomplices could not be linked to the rape incident. She said the woman managed to identify Mokhothu as he was reportedly a regular at the tavern where the victim had been returning from on that fateful morning. Mpakane said the victim testified that the men had forcedly pushed her into the bathroom at the taxi rank. One of the assailants then assaulted her and thereafter they raped her.
