A 66-year-old man found guilty of raping his 13-year-old granddaughter was sentenced on 31 January in the Botshabelo Regional Court to life imprisonment for the rape committed in July.

Sgt Martin Xuma, spokesperson of the Botshabelo police, says DNA samples linked the grandfather with the incident which happened in the backyard-dwelling the victim shared with her parents in Section K, Botshabelo, when she came from school.

“She was taking an afternoon nap when the grandfather went into the shack and raped her. Her parents were at work and the grandmother was in Winburg.”

The child informed her aunt, who alerted the police. Investigative officer Const. George Dlamini of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit found the victim with the grandfather.
