The Bloemfontein Regional Court has sentenced Lungisane Duncan Mazibuko (59) to ten years imprisonment for attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

This followed the shooting of his wife, Bongiwe Norice Mazibuko (54), on the morning of 13 February last year in a flat in Bloemfontein.

The shooting incident occurred in the couple’s bedroom in a block of flats in Willows where they stayed.

“It was also stated that when the children heard the gunshot, they went to investigate.

“They found their mother lying on the floor.

“The court heard that the accused instructed the two children to run away, and he continued shooting her three times.

“He then went to hand himself to the police at the Parkweg Police Station,” said Sgt. Sinah Mpakane, Free State police spokesperson.

The woman, who was shot four times with an illegal gun on her birthday, survived the brutal incident.

The couple has three children of whom two are older than 20 years.

The accused remained in custody for the duration of the trial until his sentencing on 16 May.

The police investigation established that the motive must have been insurance money.

It emerged that after the incident Mazibuko reportedly went to change the information on his wife’s policies to make himself the sole beneficiary.

Further investigation revealed that the accused did not have a license to possess such a firearm.

The gun he used, a Norinco pistol, was reportedly stolen in Sea Point, Cape Town.

The police confiscated it from Mazibuko.
