2016-02-10 06:00

PHUTHADITJHABA. – A 28-year-old man from the Boiketlo Village in Qwaqwa was sentenced to 20 years effective imprisonment by the Phuthaditjhaba Thabo Mofutsanyana Secure Centre after he had been found guilty of rape.

Apparently, he raped an eight-year-old child, who is a family member, in April 2015.

He was convicted by the Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

The man was in police custody until his trial which began on Monday, 1 February.

He admitted his guilt on the charge of rape and was sentenced.

The incident took place on 5 April 2015 when the accused was attending a family party.

He then requested the child to accompany him to a nearby shop.

On the way to the shop they met his sister who asked the accused where he was going with the child.

He told his sister that they were going to a shop.

The accused lied to the child and did not take her to the shop.

Instead he took her to the Letshalemaduke Village where he raped her.

Both returned to the family gathering where the child revealed the reason for the delay.

The police were called immediately and the man was arrested on the same day.
