Man guilty of raping woman

A Botshabelo man, Motloane Julius Mohapi (43), was found guilty of raping a woman last year.

Mohapi was sentenced to effective eight years imprisonment on 1 March for raping a 23-year-old woman near the Botshabelo Old Age Home in B Section.

Sgt Martin Xuma, spokesperson of the police cluster, said the accused repeatedly raped the victim at knife-point while she was screaming for help. He said the victim was alone, going home after binge drinking at a local tavern on 24 June, when she was cornered and overpowered by the man at about 23:30.

The victim managed to escape and alerted patrolling police members.

  • “The victim, who was crying, showed the on-duty members the accused who raped her. The members apprehended him. DNA samples from the accused and victim were taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory and positively matched Mohapi as the rapist,” said Xuma. The police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit has strongly warned residents to avoid walking at night as rapists target lone drunken victims.
