The Marquard Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Thabo David Letsipa (41) to 15 years direct imprisonment for murdering his wife, Nuku Kwenane (20) on Christmas Day in 2016.

The sentencing ends the year-long wait for justice for the victim, who was murdered at Deshoren Farm in the district of Marquard. Letsipa was sentenced on Monday, 29 January.

Capt. Phumelelo Dhlamini, Marquard cluster police spokesperson, says a post-mortem revealed that the victim had died due to strangulation and severe wounds due to repeated assault.

“She sustained wounds to the head and body. The accused beat the woman several times with an iron rod. He then forced her to go to sleep instead of seeking medical help.”

Dhlamini says the investigation revealed that Letsipa had attacked the deceased after accusing her of having an affair with a family member. According to Dhlamini, the incident took place in the presence of the couple’s two children, aged nine and 12.

“The next morning, the children realised that their mother could not wake up. After having tried to wake her up, they called for assistance. The farm owner called emergency services, who certified the woman dead on arrival.”
