Gr.12 learners from all over the country can now enter the Matriculant of the Year competition, presented annually by the University of the Free State (UFS) andVolksblad since 1981.

The winner and top finalists can win prizes worth thousands of rands.

It is a requirement for the matriculant who wants to enter, to have the intention of studying full-time at the UFS from 2019.

Matriculants can enter themselves, or be entered by their school. However, in both cases the principal’s signature and the school stamp must be on the entry form.

Out of all the entries, 25 semi­finalists will be selected. From these semifinalists, 14 top finalists will be announced, to take part in the final round of the competition during the Matriculant of the Year weekend.

This takes place from Friday, 28 September, at 08:00, until the morning of Sunday 30 September. The top finalists are required to attend all the activities during this weekend.

The winner’s prizes are an overseas trip for two sponsored by XL Astra Travel, prize money of R10 000 from the sponsors, Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket, a R12 000 study bursary from UFS Marketing, and gifts and the Matriculant of the Year weekend valued at R8 000.

The 13 other top finalists each receive prize money of R10 000 from Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket, a study bursary of R7 500 from UFS Marketing, and gifts and the weekend valued at R8 000.

Two special prizes of R5 000 each, sponsored by Kovsie Alumni Trust, will be presented to the best achiever in sport and the best achiever in culture.

A sparkle personality will also be selected during the weekend.

The 11 other semifinalists who were not top finalists, each receive prize money of R3 000 from Kovsie Alumni Trust and a study bursary of R3 500 from UFS Marketing.

All bursaries and prize money will be directly paid into the student’s Absa account after registration at the UFS.
