PHUTHADITJHABA. – Vusi Tshabalala, the executive mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, has called off the annual Dipontsho Tsa Maluti-a-Phofung Cultural Festival.

Tshabalala has sited the on-going water crisis as the reason for the suspension of the week-long festival that promotes tourism, arts and culture.

Last year, the event was staged from 7 to 13 September and this year it was expected to take place in November.

“We have decided to suspend the event this year, but hopefully we will continue with it next year.

“Our people need water and it would be unfair if we spent about R10 million on entertainment while we still have this water crisis.

“We now want to prioritise water and see if we can’t at least drill boreholes in our municipality,” he said.

Apparently Dipontsho has been a popular event in Qwaqwa since 1980, but it was stopped in 1993.

Tshabalala revived it last year, a few years after he took over in the local municipality.

“I know that people have been saying bad things about me, claiming that I don’t want to give them water, but that is not true.

“We have hired a number of trucks that supply water to all the affected areas in the municipality and we are still establishing other means.

“We should all pray for rain, because that is the only thing we need to overcome the current situation,” said the mayor.

It is about a year now that people from Qwaqwa have been struggling with water as a result of the drought that has hit South Africa.
