PHUTHADITJHABA. Z The executive mayor of Maluti-a-Phofung, Vusi Tshabalala, was shocked to find a huge sewage spill when he joined a cleaning campaign at the Maqhekung section of Phuthaditjhaba on Wednesday (06/07).

He said that to him it looked like it had been flowing for more than ten years.

“I am disappointed to find things like these. It is because of things like these that we are losing votes,” he said.

The fuming mayor immediately summoned the managers of the Maluti-a-Phofung (Map) Water entity to come and look at the problem.

He instructed them to fix it the same day.

Tshabalala, who went to the area for a cleaning campaign with some of the councillors and members of the Community Workers Programme (CWP), was called to heavy-flowing sewage that had already formed a dam on its way to the river.

He said it was unacceptable for people to be consuming and using such water.

Some of the community members from Qwaqwa had been forced to use water from the river during the current drought crisis.

He added that Map Water had to fix this problem, failing which they could face punitive measures.

“We want to apologise, as the municipality, to the community for not collecting garbage because our trucks were broken.

“We decided to come here as the municipality to clean the illegal dumping areas,” he said.

He said they were going to visit all the areas in the municipality with the cleaning campaign. He added that he would like to see the municipality as one of the cleanest municipalities in the Free State.

“While we were cleaning, I spotted a big spillage and we have requested Map water to fix it.

“The report that I got was that they had been working on it in the past, but the problem is that the pipes burst after a certain period. They should make sure that they close it,” he said.

Map Water could not be reached for comment. People who came to witness the spillage said they were not allowed to comment on the matter.
