Member intimidated

2017-12-13 06:01

The Bloemfontein police are investigating an intimidation charge against some members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Bloemfontein region.

This is after sensitive information – threats to harm a member – was leaked from a WhatsApp group comprising some members of the political party.

Information from the “conspiracy WhatsApp group” was leaked by an unidentified source, who then informed the targeted member, Tankiso Thoabala.

Upon discovering information which had been circulated among members belonging to the group, Thoabala opened a case at the Parkweg Police Station in Bloemfontein.

Information in a series of messages written in Sotho had been circulated among members belonging to the same WhatsApp group.

Thoabala’s photos were also circulated. One of the members of the group even posted a gun next to photos taken of Thoabala with a high-ranking female member of the EFF.

Capt. Chaka Marope, Parkweg police cluster spokesperson, says a case of intimidation is being investigated and that no arrest has been made since the complainant,Thoabala, opened the case in September.

“The complainant indicated in a statement that he was feeling uncomfortable and unsafe after discovering his photos had been posted via social media and that one suspect had posted a firearm next to his photos,” says Marope.

One of the messages with the firearm read: “Tankiso ha lebona. Hase plastic eo ya couch, ke makoya.”

Loosely translated it means: Tankiso is trouble and the posted gun is not plastic, but is a real gun.

It has emerged that the WhatsApp group consists of men and women whose identities are known by the complainant and other members.

Thoabala says he is shocked by the potential conspiracy to harm him, as he has no ambitions to challenge any top position in the EFF party. He says he is trying to figure out what the motive for the alleged campaign against him is.

“I feel my life is in danger since discovering information with such ill intentions. I’m just an ordinary branch member, not active in the organising of activities. What the plot against me is about, is extremely worrying,” says Thoabala.
