Memorial lecture held for freedom fighter

2016-12-07 06:01

Unsung freedom fighter Peter Swartz, who has his roots in Bloemfontein, will be remembered with the presentation of a memorial lecture on 18 December.

Swartz is one of the prominent figures in the documentary 12 Disciples of Nelson Mandela, which is about the life and times of freedom fighters born and bred in Bloemfontein.

Paying homage to a freedom fighter of note, the event is an initiative of the Global Rural Development Agency.

This year’s is the first edition of the lecture to be held at the Kamohelo Primary School, located in the impove-rished settlement named after Swartz.

Family members of the late Swartz are expected to attend.

Musa Tsholeka, chairperson of the agency, said the lecture will also serve as a reconciliation festival aimed at reminding the community of the real vision of freedom fighters such as Swartz and strive to revive the vision.

“We aim to teach those who don’t know about the role of Swartz in the fight for freedom. The lecture will also serve as a motivation to all learners who will be attending, to encourage them that their background shouldn’t determine their future,” said Tsholeka.

The former executive mayor of the Mangaung Metro Municipality, a former national chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga), Thabo Manyoni, and currently Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, and Lucas Matobako, president of Safa Mangaung, are expected to shed light on Swartz during their individual addresses.

Commemorative events will also include sports and recreational activities and live arts and culture performances.

Organisations and people interested in participating and attending can contact Musa Tsholeka on 061-918-6086.
