Minimum wage welcomed

2017-08-02 06:02

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) welcomes the introduction of the national minimum wage.

This will come into effect on 1 May 2018.

The national minimum wage has been set at R20 per hour or R3 500 per month for those that work 40 hours per week.

Those who work 45 hours per week will have their minimum wage set at R3 900.

Angel Gurrìa, secretary general of OECD, says she welcomes the national minimum wage initiative by South African authorities.

Gurría says it will reduce poverty among workers and make growth more inclusive.

She welcomes the fact that the set minimum wage will apply to all, not just certain, sectors.
