THE acting Northern Cape ANC leader and speaker of the legislature breathed a sigh of relief after his trial had been postponed to after the municipal election scheduled for 3 August.

Kenny Mmoiemang is accused of assaulting his former lover.

He was charged with assault, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and crimen injuria. Hy is also accused of violating a court interdict.

On 9 May, Mmoiemang waited hours for his case to appear before the court. He was accompanied by lawyers and family.

The case was postponed so that the state could submit documents to Mmoiemang’s defence team and so that they could study it.

The form of indictment also needs to be compiled so as to include all the charges against Mmoiemang.

Mmoiemang asked residents of Kimberley and the Northern Cape to vote for the ANC during the party’s manifesto launch in Galeshewe recently.

He took over from former ANC leader John Block after his resignation following his conviction on charges of fraud and corruption.

Block also resigned as the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.

Philemon Thiba is the state prosecutor. Adv. Mohammed Desai is defending Mmoiemang.

Magistrate André Williams postponed the trial to 23 August.
