More than 30 000 people across the 57 villages in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District in Kuruman are reported to have benefitted from the medical services provided by the Kuruman Community Trust (KCT) Mobile Clinic over the past three years.

Since its launch in 2015, the mobile clinic has made its way to villages throughout the impoverished region where decent medical facilities can be a day’s travel away.

Villages like Gamopedi, Olifantshoek and Tsineng are from 50 km to 110 km away from Kuruman, making the distance almost impossible for residents to access the already overburdened hospital and the local clinics.

KCT was set up to provide health services to the Kuruman community through the participation of the United Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) mine in the JTG District.

The KCT Mobile Clinic rotates between identified villages, setting up base in each location for approximately two to four weeks, geared to manage up to 150 patients daily to ensure the residents receive deserved quality care.

The clinic offers medical screenings and treatment for acute conditions such as headaches, stomach aches, colds and flue, chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, heart and kidney disease, gynaecological care including pap smears, HIV counselling and testing and free eye tests and glasses at the mobile eye clinic.

Patients also have an in-house dental clinic that provides cleaning, minor dental ailments care, minor surgical procedures and teeth extractions.

Services are free of charge in these areas hard hit by unemployment and socio-economic challenges.

The mobile clinic also assists the Northern Cape Department of Health where ever necessary.

In order to rally towards the prevention of serious medical issues provided by the mobile clinic in these under-resourced rural areas, a request is made for support of companies who are operating and established in the Northern Cape region, and in the rest of South Africa to lend a helping hand.

The KCT has also identified the high number of cervical cancer fatalities as a particular concern in the JTG area.

The trust will be launching a campaign to ensure that women receive medical care in the form of free Pap smears and education needed to save their lives by ensuring early diagnosis and referral for specialist care.

With more support, the trust hopes to embark on early cervical changes treatment as part of its operations.
