The young mother accused of allegedly abandoning her baby boy will reappear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court later in November.

The woman’s identity cannot be revealed, in order to protect the child.

The 18-year-old woman was granted bail of R500 during her brief appearance in court on 26 October.

Sgt. Ikobeng Hlubi, spokesperson of the Mangaung police, said the woman faced a charge of child neglect. She said the woman “came out of hiding” on 24 October.

Hlubi said the woman had been arrested by the police at the Mangaung Police Station when she enquired about the baby.

The baby, who is estimated to be six months old, is presently at a place of safety in Bloemfontein.

The baby was reportedly discovered by a couple on the night of 28 September, in a street in Caleb Motshabi.

Hlubi said the couple had taken the baby to the Kagisanong Police Station, where a case of child neglect was registered for investigation.

“She (the mother) went to the Mangaung Police Station to ask about her son, alleging that she had not left the baby alone.

“She claimed she had given the baby to a child known to her to take the baby to his father’s family,” said Hlubi.
