Murder trial set to commence in high court

The trial against Katlego Selokoane (24) over the alleged murder of his neighbour, Magdeline Moshupi Sedibe (42), is set to continue in the Bloemfontein High Court in September.

The accused faces charges of murder and violating a corpse.

After the conclusion of the pre-trial in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 12 June, the case was transferred to the High Court.

The case of the brutal murder of Sedibe, a mother of two, resumed in May after the police in Bloemfontein had received DNA results from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Pretoria. Forensic investigation had established a connection between the suspect and the victim, whose burnt body had been found at the Hamilton sewage dam in Bloemfontein.

Because her body was burnt, the police were unable to positively identify her. Blood samples were sent to the forensic laboratory to determine the cause of death and confirm her identity.

It is believed that Sedibe, also known as Kukie, was killed on 7 November 2017 over a quarrel with Selokoane about a tree whose leaves were hanging into her yard at her house in Bloemanda. The court previously heard that Sedibe had apparently confronted Selokoane about the branches of his tree hanging over into her yard in Bloemanda.

On the day of her murder, Sedibe informed her children where she was going and when she would be back.

However, she never returned home.

When Sedibe did not return home, her children reported her as missing to the police, leading to investigation.

The court put it to the accused that he had beaten the victim to death.

The doctor’s findings revealed that Sedibe had been hit on the back of the head with a blunt object.

The court further argued that, after killing the victim, Selokoane had burnt the body in his yard.

It is alleged that the accused had moved the body with a wheelbarrow to dispose of it at the sewage dam.

Various people had reportedly overheard a heated argument between Sedibe and Selokoane on the day of the murder.

One inhabitant had been awakened by the noise. When he looked out through his window, he saw that Selokoane had made a fire on a mattress in his yard.

Sedibe’s gruesome murder came to light after the police had found traces of blood and human flesh, as well as burnt mattress, in Selokoane’s yard.

After much interrogation, the accused led the police to the dam where Sedibe’s body was found.
