The man who murdered Daniel Bruwer (78) and his wife, Marian (67), on their farm near Van Stadensrus on 25 June 2018 was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Free State High Court found Tsediso Motankoba (27) guilty of the crime and handed down his sentence on Thursday (01/08).

According to Phaladi Shuping, regional spokesperson of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Motankoba was sentenced to life for each of the two counts of murder, 20 years for housebreaking with the intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances, ten years for the unlawful possession of firearms, and another two years for the unlawful possession of ammunition.

He said Motankoba’s co-accused, Motlatsi Motsetse, was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment last year after pleading guilty to the double murder.

“Identifiable fingerprints lifted inside the house matched those of Motsetse,” said Shuping.

It emerged in court that Motankoba and Motsetse went to the couple’s farm, Florida, and broke into the house.

“They ambushed the couple and assaulted them. They also stole the couple’s vehicle, two cellphones, a bank card, laptop, jewellery and seven firearms,” said Shuping.

The murder came to light following an inspection by their employees.

They went to the farmhouse after the couple did not fetch them at the usual spot in Wepener.

“Upon investigation, the bodies of the victims were discovered in the house. Their hands were tied,” said Shuping.

“The deceased’s car was found abandoned at the Qibing soccer grounds. Investigation led to the arrest of the two suspects.”

According to Shuping, state prosecutor Adv. Moipone Moroka requested the court to sentence Motankoba to a minimum life imprisonment as described by law.

“The deceased were tortured and severely traumatised before they were shot in execution style in their own home. These actions did not only affect the family of the victims, but also the families of the employees who lost their jobs.”
