The Free State Youth Orchestra’s (FSYO) symphony concert promises to be thrilling with two established musicians teaming up.

These are conductor Alexander Fokkens and violinist Samson Diamond.

They will perform together in the show on Friday (03/05) at the Odeion School of Music in Bloemfontein. The event starts at 19:30 and is free of charge.

This compelling symphony concert will showcase Beethoven’s Two Romances for Violin and the Symphony no. 7 in A major, which highlight how Beethoven could capture a mood or emotion, and through composition, brought it out into the open to explore what it means to the listener.

Diamond, leader of the Odeion String Quartet and the Free State Symphony Orchestra’s concert master, will be the soloist in the Romances.

According to Fokkens, they work along with the Ingoma of South African composers, Hendrik Hofmeyr, to show the essence of being a young musician.

“This is why we chose it for the FSYO to perform. The young musicians encapsulate the beauty of the Romances and the Second movement, with joyful exuberance and song of the rollicking finale and the songs of Ingoma,” said Fokkens.

German composer Richard Wagner said of Beethoven that “if anyone plays the Seventh, tables and benches, cans and cups, the grandmother, the blind and the lame, aye, the children in the cradle fall to dancing.”
