Names at UFS to change

PHUTHADITJHABA. – The council of the University of the Free State (UFS) has approved a list of name changes and new names for several buildings and academic centres.

One of the libraries on the UFS’s Qwaqwa Campus will be named after Tsiame Kenneth Mopeli.

The late Mopeli was the founder of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa and former chief minister of Qwaqwa. He died on 1 October in the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa, following a long illness. He founded more than 500 schools, five colleges of education (now called Further Education and Training Colleges) and the Uniqwa University.

Changes on the Bloemfontein Campus are:

  • C.R. Swart Building: Equitas Building
  • Building housing the media studio: Visual Media Hub
  • Centre for Financial Planning Law: School of Financial Planning Law
  • Centre for Accounting: School of Accountancy

Changes on the South Campus are:

  • Arena: Madiba Arena
  • VIP Lounge: Madiba VIP Lounge
  • Conference Hall: Ukubizana Centre
  • Old Education buildings: Bohlale A, Bohlale B and Bohlale C
  • Library: Neville Alexander Library
  • Cafeteria: Southern Café
  • Lecture venues: Isifundo A, Isifundo B, Isifundo C, Isifundo D, Isifundo E and Isifundo F
  • New residence: Legae
