The bar was raised by Northern Cape Tourism during the 2018 Africa’s Travel Indaba, held at the Durban International Convention Centre.

The tourism authority proudly scooped the Outdoor Stand Gold Award.

For Mac Jack, MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, this is the cherry on top, which was earned through hard work.

The annual tourism indaba was held from Tuesday, 8 May, until Thursday, 10 May, as Africa’s Travel Indaba.

This year buyers from 1 747 countries from all over the world and more than 22 exhibiting African countries took part in the event.

“Last year I indicated in my budget speech that we were in the process of procuring a tourism bus.

“This year, the first time we brought the bus to Indaba, we received a gold award in the outdoor category,” said Jack.

The Northern Cape Tourism Bus was launched in the Pixley ka Seme District in December 2017.

Jack proudly expressed how Northern Cape Tourism proved once again its capability of participating fully in the international arena, by attracting more buyers to its stands every year.

“This is because we improve on our products each year.”

Team Northern Cape hosted a diamond draw competition, which reportedly saw two people winning high-quality diamonds mined in the province.

The Northern Cape Tourism Authority (NCTA) also cemented its long-standing partnership with the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA).

“The three-year agreement will see the two provinces cross-selling the two regions as a Cape Experience and creating travel drawcards to both provinces.”

Jack gave the renaming of the Vanderkloof Dam after struggle icon Nelson Mandela the thumbs-up.

This dam, South Africa’s second largest, is located on the border of the Northern Cape and the Free State.

The suggestion of the renaming was done by the inter-ministerial committee as part of plans that were announced to celebrate the centenary events of the former president and Albertina Sisulu.

The renaming process is expected to be officiated in September.

Other presentations Jack lauded for having attracted the interest of buyers, are the 18 Northern Cape Gems at the Hidden Gems Village and also the speed marketing sessions.

The attractions in the line-up ranged from culture, heritage, history and township vibe, to wildlife and adventure.

The hidden gems included the small business tour operators, accommodation, arts and crafts attractions, restaurant owners and adventure operators.

“Our Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) have been identified as productive drivers of inclusive economic growth and development in the Northern Cape.

“They are considered an important contributor to the economy as drivers for job creation.”

At Indaba, the Northern Cape promoted its numerous tourism offerings, from adventure-based experiences and authentic cultural attractions, to the hidden gem experiences.
