Eight suspects, including a police officer, were arrested at a communal farm at Delportshoop on Sunday (21/01) evening in connection with illegal hunting.

The officer is apparently a policeman from Mahikeng, North West.

According to Brig. Mohale Ramatseba, the police’s provincial head of communications, the suspects were arrested at the Horing Doring farm.

“Three carcasses of blue wildebeest were recovered. A double-cab bakkie, as well as two rifles, were confiscated,” said Ramatseba in a statement.

Lt.Genl. Risimati Shivuri, provincial commissioner of the police in the Northern Cape, pointed out that the arrest would send a strong message to police officials involved in criminal activities. He urged members of the community to report such police officials.

The suspects have appeared in the Barkly West Magistrate’s Court.
