Law enforcement agencies, the Hawks, the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit and forensic experts have launched an investigation after an attack on two police sergeants at Vierfontein in the Free State.

The officers were attacked on Saturday (08/02) by three unknown armed men.

Brig. Mathapelo Peters, acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Police, said a male officer was fatally shot while a female officer escaped with gunshot wounds. She said the survivor had been admitted to a local hospital and was in a stable condition.

Peters said the officers were on duty when the assailants attacked them at about 21:05.

“The two sergeants had followed a suspicious vehicle from Vierfontein to Roadhouse in Orkney,” said Peters.

“The members approached the suspicious vehicle to confront the suspects, who also got out of their vehicle.

“They began arguing with the police officials before they opened fire on and subsequently disarmed the officers of their official pistols, two magazines and ammunition.”
