A female police officer escaped death while her partner was killed during the robbery of a petrol station in Kagisanong, Bloemfontein.

On Sunday, 22 January, a group of armed robbers opened fire on the two, who were in their vehicle at the petrol station located adjacent to the Kagisanong Police Station and shopping centre in Rocklands.

Capt. S’fiso Nyakane, the Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, said the elite crime-fighting unit was invetigating robbery, car hijacking, murder and attempted murder following the shooting of the police officer.

He said the robbers were still on the run. Nykane stated that the deceased and the officer had been injured when the robbers had shot at them at about 22:00. The officer and her partner were admitted to a local hospital, where her partner succumbed to the gunshot injuries sustained.

“The officer is recovering and is in a stable condition,” said Nyakane.

He said the robbers had been fleeing from the filling station with the loot when they spotted the officer’s vehicle approaching.

“The armed robbers fired three shots towards the vehicle, injuring both the officer and her partner, who was in the passenger seat. The robbers had managed to take an undisclosed amount of money from the petrol station.

“Thereafter, on the scene, they (the robbers) hijacked a silver-grey Ford Accord which they used to flee. The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby.”

Nyakane said the robbers had overpowered the night-duty staff.

The Hawks are appealing to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of the robbers to call the Crime Stop number 08600-10111 or send an anonymous SMS tip-off to the Crime Line at 3221.

Members of the public with information can also contact their nearest police station.
