Open their eyes

2017-11-15 06:01

Dear God, please open the eyes of our people to stand together and fight for the rights that our mothers and fathers fought and sacrificed for, and that our forefathers suffered for at the hands of apartheid.

Lord, please teach our people to learn their rights and labour laws in order not to suffer abuse as they do.

And God, please grant our leaders the wisdom to not only serve their own selfish interests, but to do what is expected of them when they are placed in positions or granted the jobs that you gave them with your good intentions.

May they not sit in their air-conditioned offices and sell the souls of ordinary people who go through hell just to put a plate of food on the table.

I am writing this after spending the whole week trying to console my younger sister, who saw a traumatising incident of a woman miscarrying at her workplace due to the selfishness and slave-driving mentality of her employers.

The poor women was exposed to shame and humiliation, when she had to be loaded onto a heavy-duty grocery trolley and into a security car, to be rushed to hospital.

The woman had reportedly been complaining to the bosses that she was in pain since the morning, but her boss refused to release her, citing her already being on the schedule and having to finish her shift.

When the pain got worse, she was reportedly sent to work at the back of the store in order not to upset the customers.

The bosses also refused that an ambulance be called, as it would attract unnecessary attention.

According to the workers at this well-known wholesaler in Kimberley, these are the working conditions that they suffer under.

They say many of them have gone to the CCMA and the Department of Labour, but they do not even see any results of their cases.
