FICKSBURG. – The community of Ficksburg have warned the ruling party, the ANC, that it stands to lose five wards in the Setsoto Local Municipality in the upcoming local government election, if it does not rectify its of choice in candidates in the local election.

They handed over the memorandum to Tsheliso Jakobo, the mayor of the Setsoto Local Municipality, on Tuesday, 31 May.

It was stated in the memorandum that the ANC should rectify what fellow comrades had done when they disregarded the wishes of the community when they chose candidates to represent them in the upcoming local elections, otherwise they might lose Wards 10, 12, 13 and 15.

“The candidates nominated and supported by the vast majority are Stephen Manko, Morake Letube, Sehloho Samuel Pekeche, Thabang Elias Makae and Tieho Makgalanyane,” they stated.

The memorandum further reads that as supporters and members of the party, they have made countless attempts to communicate their grievances to the relevant structures to resolve the candidate nominations, but nothing has happened.

“The so-called leaders in the so-called higher structures have made it clear that they will disregard and disrespect the voice and opinions of the very same people who put this organisation in power.

“ANC policies stipulated that the 2016 local government elections would be based on the freedom charter and as such the people shall govern. The community will nominate a representative that they feel can and will lead them,” the memorandum stated.

The community said some members of the organisation had disrespected the organisation’s policies as well as the supporters and members of the organisation.

“We will show them that we as the people govern and the ANC did not put themselves in power, but we as the people did.

“Further proof that the ANC continues to disrespect our opinions, is that a candidate for Ward 11 in Setsoto, Rina Koalane, faces a criminal charge for which the court hearing has been set for 13 June.

Thabo Molebatsi, one of the march organisers, said they were going to make Ficksburg ungovernable should they not get the responses before the agreed seven days had expired.

Jakobo has promised to give them a response within seven days.
