Party to take action for pensioners

2016-11-02 06:03

The DA in the Free State plans to take up the ongoing issue of illegal deductions of monies from state grant beneficiaries with the MEC for Social Development, Limakatso Mahasa.

Mariette Pittaway, DA member of provincial legislature, said the party would table a motion in the legislature, requesting Mahasa to conduct investigations into the continuous unlawful deductions from pension funds during the social development meeting today (03/11). Pittaway said the DA already raised the matter in May this year.

“We were informed that the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) may only allow one deduction per month, not exceeding 10% of the value of the beneficiary’s social grant for a funeral policy. Beneficiaries complain that they still get unlawful and unauthorized deductions from pension funds.

“Amounts varying from R100 to R200 are deducted for electricity and airtime. This is in breach of the Long-term Insurance Act, 1998 (Act No. 52 of 1998). Pensioners rely on money provided by the government.

“It is disturbing that they are left vulnerable to culprits having their way with the little that they have and desperately need.

“MEC Mahasa must do the right thing and probe these illegal deductions if she cares for the wellbeing of the poor and elderly,” said Pittaway.
