People urged to donate blood

With the festive season fast approach­ing, blood stocks remain critically low.

Silungile Mlambo, spokesperson for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), said approximately 50 000 units of blood are required across the country in the next few weeks.

According to Mlambo, less than 1% of South Africans regularly donate blood, and that is why the reserves are at such low levels.

“It is especially those who are not able to go to private hospitals who suffer the most.”

She said most South Africans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives.

“Blood transfusions are given to patients undergoing surgical operations, patients with cancer or leukemia, children with severe anaemia and women who haemorrhage as a complication of giving birth,” she said.

Due to an increase in traffic and a bigger danger of road accidents, there is an increased need for blood for accident victims this time of year.

People aged 16 to 65, who weigh more than 50 kg and lead a sexually safe lifestyle, can visit their nearest blood donor centre or look out for pop-up blood drive activities throughout the city, as was held at the Mimosa Mall on Saturday (24/11).

Companies, churches and residential complexes can also contact the SANBS to do a blood drive on their premises.
