Pipe repair set to begin

The Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality has urged the residents to be patient while major work to repair broken water supply pipes to the greater Qwaqwa area, is under way.

The plea followed sporadic protests over non-supply of water.

The latest protest was on 20 February and saw angry residents in areas of Monontsha, Tseki, Kudumane and Bolata barricaded main roads with burning tyres and stones to express their frustration regarding non-supply of water by the local authority.

Mpho Mabena, spokesperson of the municipality, said the scope of work includes the reconnection of pipes and the repair of pipes which were vandalized during temporary stoppage of water projects.

She said with the recent significant improvements of the water level in the Fika Patso Dam (from as low as 8% to the current 60%), they hope to address the water supply crisis.

“The municipality has allocated material worth R3 million for the repair of pipes.

“Work is currently in progress in areas which include Mphatlalatsane.

“The municipality acknowledges the dissatisfaction of communities over water.

“An appeal is made for communities to stop vandalising water connections and electricity because these acts contribute to the bigger problems faced by the municipality,” said Mabena.
