The Northern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liasion has expressed his condolences to family and friends, as well as to the community at large, after lives were lost due to road accidents this past week.

“It is truly unfortunate that we have continued to lose precious lives on our province’s roads and, moreover, our children and parents,” said MEC Lebogang Motlhaping.

Seven people, of which two were children, lost their lives in two different accidents.

In the first instance, a male driver and two children died on the scene after a vehicle overturned on the R31 (Barkly West Road), while the mother and a girl survived the accident.

In another accident, four people died on the scene on the Douglas Road when a motor vehicle collided with a truck. The truck driver survived and was transported to hospital, while the occupants of the sedan died on the scene.

“I am truly concerned about the number of lives we continue to lose on our roads. It cannot be said enough that one life lost is one too many.

“We need to take hands as government, the transport sector, communities and all road users at large to ensure we create safer roads and (a safer) atmosphere for driving,” said Motlhaping.

He pleaded with road users to put into practice these road safety tips:

  • Buckle up all passengers and drivers and make sure children are in child seats.
  • Drive within the speed limit.
  • Do not overtake when it is not safe to do so.
  • Drive sober and, when taking medication, ensure it is conducive to safe driving.
  • Ensure driver and vehicle fitness before any journey.
