POETS of note, locally and nationally, are billed to showcase their creativity at the Poetry Café, one of the new programmes featured in this year’s Free State Arts Festival underway at the University of the Free State’s main campus in Bloemfontein. This is an initiative presented jointly by the Free State Arts Festival and InZync. It makes provision for three events. The Slam Poetry workshop is happening today (13/07).

The workshop will offer the audience a great opportunity to watch the facilitators of the poetry, along with the judges, (which include Jaco van der Merwe from the band Bittereinder), taking to the stage with their performances.

This will be followed by Poetry Slam and Poetry Celebration & Open Mic on Thursday (14/07) and Friday (15/07) at the ATKV Centenary Complex on the UFS main campus. Poetry-loving audiences are guaranteed a great and memorable experience, with a great line-up of influential poets who are prepared to share their knowledge. Billed for the poetry event are South Africa’s first National Slam champion Koleka Putuma, Pieter Odendaal and Makhafula Vilakazi.

The Poetry Slam on Thursday is a perfect platform for poets of all languages and creeds to fight it out to be crowned the first Free State Literary Festival champion. Adrian “Diff” van Wyk will be the host and the judges will be Thabiso Nkoana, Vangi Gantsho and Pieter Odendaal. Friday’s Poetry Café will end the week with intriguing performances. Some the locals expected to grace the poetry feast include Tessa Muller (author of Dedications of Colour), Flaxman Qoopane (author of A poet abroad and owner of Literary Gallery) and Tshiamo Malatji.

Tickets are available at Computicket for R50.
