Police appeal to

2018-02-07 06:01

Following the arrest of a woman in connection with petrol theft at fuel stations, the Bloemfontein police are appealing to fuel station owners who have fallen prey to this crime to come forward.

Capt. Chaka Marope, spokesperson of the Parkweg Police Cluster, says the suspect was out on bail of R500, which was granted on her first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court. He says Magrieta Smalberg (47), who allegedly resorted to crime to fill her car’s fuel tank, was caught after a few petrol station owners had opened cases.

“Her white Citi Golf was spotted by patrolling members on the Jagersfontein Road, just on the outskirts of Bloemfontein. The police followed it and managed to pull her off the road. She was immediately arrested and the vehicle was confiscated,” says Marope.

He says three cases of petrol theft against Smalberg had been reported to the police thus far and he appealed to those who had fallen prey to come forward.

Marope says Smalberg’s modus operandi was to distract petrol attendants after having her vehicle’s tank filled.

“She would request her car tank be refilled to its full capacity. Thereafter she requested to transact with her bank card. While the petrol attendant went to fetch the transaction machine, she would speed off without making payment.”

Smalberg, who is reportedly unemployed, is expected to appear in court again on 19 February.
